Polyhydroxyl fullerene
derivatives (fullerenols) were first reported by Chiang L., et. al.
(J. Chem Soc, Chem. Commun. 1992, 1791.) They are water
soluble compounds. Fullerols are useful for the formation of gels,
starburst polymers, and composites and may be explored for
biological activity.
The number of -OH groups is typically between 18-24.
